Struggling, Like Everyone Else
Just waved
Quarantime
Everyone’s struggling through all of this… It’s weird and time is relative. To everyone struggling mentally, this is going to pass. It’s okay to not feel completely okay with what’s going on. Everyone should realize this isn’t the new normal. Quarantine is lonely & it leads to a lot of reflection. I think this is a time to have everyone reflect, on their work, their dream projects and those things. I don’t think people should be over critical of themselves though. I have a hard time not judging myself too harshly or overthinking. Part of writing this blog is an outlet for me.
I encourage people who are looking for outlets to try more creative things. There are good healthy outlets for everyone. Being on your phone all day can be a nice relaxation tool, but I think it feels good to stress your creative side. Bullet Journal, make a detailed calendar, take some indoor pictures, make some funny videos with family. There’s more to do, and although it might be out of the ordinary for you, try it.
Writing
There’ll be a lot of stories coming from this, and there will probably be rom-coms, dramas and such where this time is a main theme of the film. It’s something unusual and will have an affect on art for the foreseeable future. So If anyone has short stories about this time or that they’ve been writing I’d love to read them! Shoot me an email or DM with it and I’ll try to read it ASAP.
Surrealism
I want to take this time where maybe I have some more people reading this blog because they’re bored to tell you to check out some surrealist art today. I think it might be a good little break from what you’re normally doing. Surrealism is something that I find very fascinating and I think could be a good thing to get a little resurgence right now.
My favorite surrealist artist is Rene Magritte, so check him out. I also would push people to watch “Un Chien Andalou” by Luis Bunuel Salvador Dali. It’s a trip of a watch and if you’re inhibited, it’ll probably drive you mad. It’s hard to interpret and everyone will derive their own meaning from it.
Why I Like Surrealism
I like surrealism because it’s not real and from the experiences I’ve had with it, it can spark great conversation. Everyone can interpret these pieces so differently, or maybe it’s easier to interpret differently, but I love it.
I’m not a pro on this, mainly just a fan of Surrealism, but here’s more of my take. I think that surrealism came at a time when the world needed a big change. A lot of the idea pushing surrealism is that artists weren’t content with how things were going so they did things differently. They thought that if they didn’t like the results they were getting, with art and community, and just in the world, then they should do things differently from the start.
So, take that into today. I don’t think a lot of people are content with what’s happening in the world. So let’s make a creative push and change where some of our value in art lies. It shouldn’t be in re-made or trend-riding items getting the most attention. Surrealism for some reason feels much more original to me. Sometimes I think because there’s no way some people would be able to copy some of these great, completely strange ideas that people make.
I think I’m not doing any justice to this idea, but lookup surrealist art and scroll for a bit, whether on google images, or Pinterest, or wherever you get your art from.
You’re Rant?
I really wanted to write out a really intelligent rant today about why art should be more valued, but I feel like putting that in a blog is not that effective. Blogs aren’t taken seriously by many people. They’re fun and like a journal in a way, but I may be making a video about art coming up. It may have something to do with being about to pass 1 million likes on a easy simple wood burning tik tok while some other pieces are not as admired. There’s way more to the rant I had in mind, but that’ll do for now.
Just appreciate people’s work for their want to create it in the first place. Thank you.
Create
I’m having a hard time creating and just keeping things up during all of this, so I’ll urge you guys, all two of you, to create and hopefully that also makes me create something.
I’m just happy to be here even if things seem weird and off, but there’s still so much to do and people are doing great things. Also checkout John Krasinski’s “Good News” show!
